Organisations should manage the working environment proactively, not neglect it until a problem arises and forces them to respond defensively. It is better to direct energy proactively and positively, fixing the wider context and preventing future problems from arising.

This will typically involve encouraging the management team in setting the tone and managing performance and expectations. Crucially though, the working environment is created, sustained and owned by the people in it and they must be engaged in changing it.
